Mother's Day

It's almost Mother's Day! We love our Mom's so much, they have done so much for us over the years, and have truly supported us in the beginning of this blog adventure!

Ashley and her mom Halloween ready

We thought we would compile a few ideas for things to do with your mom for Mother's Day and a few ideas for some meaningful gifts that won't break the bank!

Sometimes just spending time with your mom  is the perfect gift. Flowers are beautiful but most moms just want their babies back, so be nice and hang out with her!

  • Have Happy Hour with your mom! When was the last time you and your mom went out and got a drink together? Find somewhere that has a pretty view or nice ambiance!
  • Go on a walk/hike, it can be a great way to catch up on your lives and spend some quite time together.
  • Take a zumba, yoga, or dance class! Maybe you will find the next "thing"  you do together!

Think about what your mom likes to do and plan something around that, does your mom like to garden? Maybe spend the day helping her pick out new flowers to plant. Does she like art? Find a museum to go to. Whatever her interests are, try something out with her or lend a hand on one of her current projects. Make it all about what she likes!

Remember when you were in 2nd grade and made your mom her 47th macaroni necklace, and she loved it because you made it? You can do something similar now! A little hard work and the help of Pinterest you can DIY something for your mom, minus the macaroni this time around.

Here are some of our favorite ideas

DIY a fun mug for her morning tea

Make a piece of art with painted doilies

Give the gift of wine! I feel like most mothers enjoy the grape so why not buy her a bottle she likes and put your own stamp on it. Customize the label by making something on your computer or by hand. It can be a nice personal touch to an everyday gift.

This says bridesmaid but you get the idea

Lastly, don't forget your many others Moms in your life; your favorite Aunt, or a friend's mom that has always been there for you, or another mother figure - sending them a card is somrthing really sweet an simple that can put a smile on thier face.

Pre-Party Planning Tips

Some of my current inspiration

As many of you know, I love a great party!

I'm currently in the process of planning a couple of different parties; bridal shower and bachelorette for one of my cousins, graduation party for my youngest brother, and a birthday party for a friend.

For each party there are specifics, however in a more general sense I go about planning each party the same way.

1. Pick your date/time/location. This is crucial in planning the rest of the event, it will play a big part in many of the other decisions including food and decor.

2. Pick your theme. Each of the parties listed above have completely different vibes. Some parties don't need a "theme" but an overall feeling is great. For instance; outdoor BBQ, brunch, or Italian dinner party. They aren't themes that you would find at a party store - but it will give you some direction when looking for food and decor.

3. Look for decor and food inspiration. When thinking about any event do some research online or look through magazines for inspiration. It will give you some great ideas for drinks to serve, decoration ideas, or favors! Pinterest is always a great place to look and with their "secret boards" it is easy to keep an element of surprise!

4. Start picking things up as you see them or set things aside in your house. If you are hosting a backyard BBQ and you have seen a few decor ideas on Pinterest that use mason jars, look in the Sunday paper or online for coupons. If you plan far enough in advance you can save yourself a lot of money. Joanne's and Michael's always have amazing coupons. Also, you can look to see when alcohol is on sale and start picking that up if you know it will be something that you will be using! Also, creating a little section of your house or garage where you can keep things will make it easy the day of!

5. Ask for help! If people offer (especially for a big event) ask them to help out. It will make your job a little easier. Even bringing a bottle of wine or an appetizer can make a huge difference. If you know that for your dinner party you want to serve water in wine bottles, ask a few friends to save their's for you!

What are some of your tips when planning a party?

Reading Celebrity Style

I was recently reading my December issue of InStyle (I know a little late) and I read that both Cameron Diaz and Drew Barymore have new books. Cameron's is a book all about the body, eating healthy, and the real science behind staying fit. It seems like a great read - perfect timing too as many people have New Year's Resolutions that they might be now slacking on and want to start up again! Drew's is a photography book in which she finds hearts in un-expected places. These both sound like such fun books and I will definitely be checking them out!

When I read this article I thought about all of my other favorite books written by some celebrities and I thought I would share them with all of you and to hopefully to inspire some reading this Spring!

The Honest Life - Jessica Alba. This book is all about living organically and pestisite-free! She has everything from what ingredients should or should not be in your shampoo to what fruits you need to purchase organically. It has given me a whole new outlook when shopping! Plus is has adorable pictures of her whole family and easy-going lifestyle.

Celebrate - Pippa Middleton. Pippa’s fabulous book is all about what she does best - party plan! She gives you great tips for different parties during each season. From children’s parties to a Scottish style highland tea, she covers everything from food to serve to decorations and color themes.

Tim Gunn's Fashion Bible - Tim Gunn. As a huge Project Runway fan I think that automatically means that I am a big Tim Gunn fan. His book covers all things fashion and it isn't your typical “don’t wear this, wear this instead” book. It truly discusses the history of each item that he covers.

Decoded - Jay-Z. I am a huge Jay-Z fan and this book does not disappoint. It is a great one to have on any coffee table as it has a very interesting cover and great stores inside. It covers his time growing up and rise to fame, while dissecting his song lyrics along the way.

Style and Beauty - Lauren Conrad. I love love love Lauren Conrad’s books almost as much as I love her. It is the perfect go-to guide for everything. Lauren goes through the basics of fashion and beauty in an all comprehensive guide for any girl.
